SEA Games 2025: Preview, schedule and how to watch Southeast Asian sporting action live

Southeast Asia convenes for a special sporting celebration at the 2025 SEA Games (9-20 December) in Thailand.

The 33rd edition of the multi-sport event returns to the location of the very first regional Games in 1959, as the Thai capital of Bangkok plays host together with the Chonburi region.

Two years on from the previous instalment in Cambodia, 10 Southeast Asian nations will compete at the 2025 edition: hosts Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Brunei Darussalam, and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

On 10 December, Cambodia withdrew their delegation from the 2025 SEA Games due to “safety concerns”.

A total of 13,657 athletes will compete across 50 medal sports, ranging from Olympic disciplines to traditional regional sports. Among them are Olympic champions, from Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo of the Philippines to Indonesia’s Rizki Juniansyah.

Elsewhere, 2021 world badminton men’s singles champion Loh Kean Yew has another shot at a first career SEA Games gold, while Alexandra Eala (Philippines) headlines the women’s tennis competition. Singaporean swimmer Quah Ting Wen looks to break the record for the most SEA Games gold medals of all time, currently held by Joscelin Yeo.

Here are the key things to know about the SEA Games.

Bou Samnang competed in the 5000-metre event at the Southeast Asian Games, where she was running through a driving rainstorm that began after most of the field had already finished. Watch the video here.

2025 SEA Games – schedule

Events are being held across the Bangkok and Chonburi regions: Songkhla was due to host 10 sports, until severe flooding in southern Thailand forced organisers to relocate all the region’s events to the capital.

Competition began on 3 December with men’s football and polo, ahead of the Opening Ceremony at the Rajamangala National Stadium on 9 December.

Badminton, baseball, flying disc, handball, and hockey 5s are the other sports that get underway before the Opening Ceremony. The Closing Ceremony will also take place at the 51,000-capacity stadium on 20 December.
